Sightseeing in Reykjavik

Hallgrimskirkja is the third-largest building in Iceland and took 38 years to build. In front of the church is a statue of Leif Eriksson, a gift from the United States. The statue of Christ inside the church was donated by the Icelandic sculptor Einar Jonsson in 1948. The church also contains a copy of the first Icelandic Bible (Gudbrandtsbiblia), printed in 1584. There is a prayer service with organ music and lunch every Thursday at noon. The church is one of only three Reykjavik churches with bells that chime on the hour.

In Laugardalur Valley (Hot Spring Valley), the center for sports and recreation in Reykjavik, are a youth hostel, a campsite, the largest outdoor thermal pool in town (Laugardalslaug), running tracks, soccer fields, an indoor ice rink, and a beautiful botanical garden with woods, ponds, and wildlife. The Café Flora also is there. Entry is free.

In Laugardalur Valley is the city's main sports stadium, which is used mostly for soccer (known as "football" in Iceland) in the summer. A sports hall nearby is used for a variety of sports, public events, pop and rock concerts, and exhibitions. In 1995, the world championship handball tournament was held there.

Egilsholl is a magnificent sports and music hall at 1 Fossaleni. It has a seating capacity of 18,000.

The Culture House is at 15 Hverfisgata and was originally intended to house the National Library and the National Archives. The National Museum and the Natural History Museum were then added, and the complex now contains exhibition halls, meeting rooms, a cafeteria, and a souvenir shop. The entrance fee is waived on Wednesdays.

The Gerduberg Culture Center is a suburban cultural center at 3-5 Gerdubergi. Inside, there are programs to encourage music, the visual arts, and literature, plus a childen's workshop library.

At Kaffi Reykjavik, at 2 Vesturgata, a brasseriestyle restaurant, there is an Ice Bar, a bar made entirely of ice and kept at a constant temperature of 23°F.

On Bernhofstorfan there is a giant-size chessboard is in front of the houses.
