Aix-en-Provence Travel Guide

Introduction

Aix-en-Provence, or simply Aix, is a small, decidedly conservative, prim and proper city, where the written law in France originated. The city, however, promotes itself as a town of art and a town of water. Which it is, with its artsy aspirations and myriad springs and fountains that give parts of town the constant sound of splashing water. And despite its Roman origin, the city is actually brimming with Baroque architecture, offering up a feast of 17th- and 18th-century Baroque urban mansions, with many of its ornate fountains dating from the Baroque period as well. Ultimately, though, it must be fair to say that Aix, just 20 miles north of Marseille, is really more than a million miles away from its boisterous, larger neighbor in spirit and style, at once historical, cultural and charming, smack in the middle of some extraordinarily lovely hiking country.

Location

Aix-en-Provence is situated in Provence, southern France, some 20 miles north of Marseille.
