Longsheng Travel Guide

Introduction

Longsheng is the domain of the hill tribes – specifically, the Dong, Yao and Zhuang. It sits at the start of a lovely region filled with stunningly picturesque villages and hillsides terraced and planted to rice, well buffered from the colorless concrete modernism of China’s cities. From Longsheng you can tour the hill country, with buses and minivans journeying into the valleys and the famous Longji mountains where paddy fields carve intricate patterns at 3,000 feet. The principal villages here are Ping’an, Longji and Dazai, which lately have been seeing scores of tourists, but there are others, deeper in the valleys, where the dwellings, customs and traditions have remained unchanged for centuries. Day-trippers arrive from Guilin and Yangshuo as well, to see what the fuss is all about and to get a whiff of a rare, unspoiled corner of China.
