Rovigo Travel Guide

Introduction

Rovigo is a medieval industrial town, and the least known and thus least visited among Veneto's provincial capitals. It does, however, possess several exceptional works of art, particularly 17th-century art, such as the brilliantly frescoed 16th-century church La Rotonda – featuring the works of such prominent provincial and Venetian artists as Francesco Maffei, Domenico Stella, Giovanni Abriani, Alessandro Varotari, Pietro Vecchia, Pietro Liberi, Antonio Zanchi and Andrea Celesti – elevating it to the circle of Italy's great art centers. As for the town itself, even though it lacks the charm of other such Veneto towns and cities as Venice and Verona, it has some surviving medieval architectural relics and a handful of interesting little villages in its proximity to engage the visitor, and inexpensive accommodations to boot.
