Menton Travel Guide

Introduction

Menton is practically a work of art – a Baroque masterpiece! It is the last major stop on the French Riviera before the Italian border, squeezed between a decidedly deep blue Mediterranean Sea and a dramatic Alpine amphitheater, where man and nature appear to have conspired to create a perfect composition. And not surprisingly, famous artists such as Monet, Renoir and Dufy actually painted it. The town itself, at least the old part of it, climbs steeply from the old harbor, up the Colla Rogna hill, in a haphazard jumble of ochre-colored medieval houses and small streets that near the top are little more than wide staircases, many of them vaulted, with the Basilique Saint Michel Archange rising approximately halfway up the hill to give Menton its striking profile; while the "new town" of Menton offers in itself a superb example of Belle Époque finesse and trappings, filled with grand mansions from the 19th and 20th centuries, together with fabulous public gardens populated with palms and exotic plants and avenues lined with tangerine, lemon and Seville orange shade trees. Indeed, here is a town that fairly sparkles in the endless sunshine, dubbed La Perle de la France – "The Pearl of France" – a work of art no matter how you slice it.

Location

Menton is situated on the French Riviera in southeastern France, close to France's border with Italy, across from the Italian border town of Ventimiglia.
