Aalborg Travel Guide

Introduction

Aalborg, or Ålborg, has one of the most famous bar streets in Denmark and a legacy tied to liquor, in particular aquavit, akvavit in Danish, which has been distilled here since 1846. The city, in fact, shares its name with a popular brand of liquor, and in the mid-19th century when production of liquor was all the rage in Denmark, it spearheaded the Danish liquor industry, with no fewer than 100 distilleries operating here. Notable among these were two establishments headed by pioneer distillers and mutual competitors Isidor Henius and Harald Jensen, who introduced to their respective distilleries their very own aquavit recipes which, after more than 150 years, continue to be offered as Aalborg Taffel and Rød Aalborg (Red Aalborg). As for the distilleries, the Danish Distillers, or De Danske Spritfabrikker, established here in 1881, is still in operation. And aquavit remains as popular as ever in Aalborg, especially in the summer months, consumed with schnapps and paired with herring.

Location

Aalborg is situated on the Jutland Peninsula, along the narrowest part of the Limfjord, with its downtown area on the south side of the sound, and Nørresundby, the northern part of the city, on the opposite side. It is 63 miles (102 km) north of Aarhus, or 66 miles (106 km) south of Skagen.
