Biarritz Travel Guide

Introduction

Biarritz is a small seaside town with a huge presence as a premier, world-class beach resort. It owes its notoriety largely to Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, who in the 1800s "discovered" Biarritz and made it her summer abode. Aristocracy and commoners alike have flocked to its fabulous beaches ever since, and reveled in all the resort trappings it affords. And while it's unlikely that visitors to Biarritz will encounter royalty now, vestiges of its regal era remain, in particular Eugenie's beachfront palace which is now the luxurious Hotel de Palais, and traces of visits by the Russian nobility which are still discernible at the adjacent Russian Orthodox Church. Biarritz, in any case, today draws vacationers of every stripe to its sun-drenched beaches that are easily among the best on this stretch of the Atlantic. Besides which, the town is ideally situated in close proximity to both Bayonne and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, all but a stone's throw from Spain to the south and a string of idyllic mountain villages further inland.
