Dresden

Residenz Schloss, Dresden, Germany, German castles

Although Dresden has an 800-year history, its finest moments came during the four-decade rule of Augustus the Strong (1694-1733). He was rather vain and autocratic but backed it up with good taste and built most of the Baroque structures that would transform Dresden from a provincial backwater to one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. His alchemist, Böttger, failed to produce gold but managed to produce the first porcelain in Europe, giving Augustus and his successors the funds to amass a wealth of art, which still forms the base of Dresden’s impressive State Art Collection. Dresden became known as Florence on the Elbe (Elbflorenz) and an essential stop on any European tour.
