Here's the village of fairytale fame, the locale of the 1865 novel, Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates, in which a Dutch boy sticks his finger in the dike to prevent the town from flooding. The village is actually built around a 13th-century dam on the River Spaarne, where the Spaarne flows into the River IJ. There's also a statue in Spaarndam dedicated to Hans Brinker, the fictional "Hero of Haarlem."
