Manchester

Manchester is the largest city in both New Hampshire and Northern New England, with a population of approximately 110,000. It is built largely on the Merrimack River, which flows through the heart of it, dividing the city into eastern and western sections. The city is historic, of course, founded in the early 19th century, with generous store of vestiges of its past still there; but for the most part, it is a modern metropolis, home to several corporate headquarters as well as the tallest building in New England north of Boston. The city also has the distinction of being the second-most tax-friendly city in the nation.

Sightseeing in Manchester

Among the popular tourist draws in Manchester is the Amoskeag Fishways, where, from an underwater window, you can watch the salmon run up the Merrimack River in the springtime. During other seasons the city offers a healthy dose of historic interest, including tracing the history of the Native Americans who once lived here. There are tours and educational programs too (call for precise dates and hours of operation; (626-3474). To get to the Fishway, take Exit 6 from Interstate 293 and bear right toward the Amoskeag (Abenaki for “great fishing place”) Bridge. Turn right at the first light, Fletcher Street, and you’ve arrived. Owned by Public Service of New Hampshire, the Fishway is managed by the Audubon Society of New Hampshire in partnership with the state Fish and Game Department and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Manchester also has a couple of museums and a science center of interest to visitors. Of the museums, the first is Currier Gallery of Art (669-6144), located at 201 Myrtle Way. To get there, take Exit 8 from Interstate 93 and bear right onto Bridge Street; go 11⁄2 miles and turn right onto Ash Street, then take the third left onto Myrtle Way; the museum is on the left. It’s open Mondays and Wednesdays through Sundays with varied hours (call to check). The museum features European and American paintings, decorative arts, and sculpture by masters such as Picasso, Matisse, Monet, O’Keeffe, Calder, and Wyeth. Also part of the museum is a Frank Lloyd Wright house from 1950, Zimmerman House, with its original furnishings and the Zimmermans’ collection of fine art.

The other museum of note is the Lawrence L. Lee Scouting Museum (669-8919) is in a wooded setting seven miles from town on the shore of Long Pond; if you’ve been a Scout, you’ll enjoy the collection and library. Open daily in July and August, and on Saturdays the rest of the year (from Interstate 93 use Exit 5 and take Route 28A north to where it crosses back under the interstate to the museum.

And then there is the Science Enrichment Encounters (SEE), a great place to spend a rainy day, with its many hands-on science exhibits. It’s at 324 Commercial Street. To get here, take Exit 5 from Interstate 93, turn right at the bottom of the ramp onto Commercial Street and look for SEE facing the river on the ground floor. Open to the public weekends from noon to 5 and Thursdays from 5 pm to 9 pm (669-0400).

The Massabesic Audubon Center, located just east of Manchester, is another tourist draw, with a brand-new focus on Lake Massabesic. To get there, from Interstate 93 take the Exit for Route 101 east toward the seacoast, then immediately take Exit 1 and turn right at the end of the ramp onto Route 28 Bypass to the traffic circle. Go halfway around the circle and turn out of it there, to find Lake Massabesic on your left. Go exactly two miles more on Route 28 Bypass to Spofford Road, where you turn left. In a quarter-mile, when the road veers to the right, take the left turn onto Deerneck Road; the parking area is after the first house on the left. Expect trails, environmental programs, and lake access. For information, 634-3313.

Also underway in Manchester is an archaeology museum expected to be called the Sargent Museum. An 1841 schoolhouse at the corner of Lowell and Chestnut Street is already housing the collection.

Merrimack

Merrimack, located between Nashua and Manchester, is a busy city and the home of a Budweiser brewery. The brewery is open to public tours, on which you can also see the magnificent Clydesdale horses (photo opportunities with the Clydesdales are available on the first Saturday of each month). Tours, which are free, are offered daily from May through October (hours vary seasonally; 595-1202) and Thursdays through Mondays from November through April. The brewery is located at 221 Daniel Webster Highway – find Route 3 south of Manchester and take Exit 10 onto Industrial Drive going east. Watch for signs.
