Sightseeing in Reno

Reno Casinos

Reno, as Nevada's second largest city, has its fair share of casinos, hotels and restaurants—some 20,000 hotel rooms and over 300 restaurants—with live entertainment to be found at several of these. Of particular interest here is the Hilton Hotel and Casino, where some fabulous shows can be enjoyed, including “Hello Hollywood Hello,” in which a real live DC-9 appears on the stage. The Hilton also boasts one of the largest casinos in the world, the size of two football fields.

Reno Museums

Also worth visiting is Harrah’s Automobile Collection on Mill and Lake streets, where, in a 100,000-square-foot facility, more than two hundred antique cars, some of them real classics, are on display—everything from Bugattis to Model A’s to Deusenbergs, Pierce Arrows and Franklins. Among these is John Wayne’s Cadillac convertible, and also the 1929 Deusenberg Dual Cowl Phaeton and 1930 DuPont Royal Town Car that were featured as Daddy Warbucks’ personal vehicles in the movie Annie. Another place of interest here is the Harrold’s Gun Collection, located in Harrold’s Club on North Virginia Street, which features several antique guns, including Wild Bill Hickcock’s .32 Smith and Wesson and a .45 Colt that once belonged to the legendary Jesse James.

Take the time also to visit the Pioneer Theatre Auditorium, situated on Virginia Street just south of the casinos. Quite distinctive with its gold geodesic dome, it was built in 1967 at an estimated cost of $2.5 million, and can accommodate up to 1,400 people. Another place of interest here is the University of Nevada, Reno. dating from 1864. The university is located just to the north of town on North Virginia Street.

Reno Events

Reno also hosts several excellent spectator events much of the year. One or two worthy of mention are the Reno National Championship Air Races and Air Show, claimed to be the world’s most daring and thrilling motorsports races, and the Reno Rodeo, one of the most colorful in the country. The air races are held in late September, and the rodeo in June. In September, too, during the second weekend, is the Great Reno Balloon Race, a memorable visual experience, featuring more than a hundred multi-colored hot-air balloons.
