East Coast, Shipwreck Beach and Garden of the Gods

Keomuku Beach

The East Coast of Lanai is comprised primarily of Keomuku Beach—a 6-mile coastal stretch on the island’s east coast that extends from Kahokunui southeast to Halepalaoa—and south from Keomuku Beach to Lopa and Naha, two ancient fishing villages.

Of interest here are Keomuku, a failed sugar plantation town, where you can visit a Japanese cemetery and see the ramshackle Ka Lanakila O Ka Malamalama Church, built in 1903 and now the last structure there, as well as an old, abandoned locomotive; Lopa, which has a small, sandy beach and an ancient fishpond; and Naha, a former fishing village that still sees the occassional fishing activity.

Shipwreck Beach

Shipwreck Beach is the name given to the 8-mile stretch of coastline along the island’s remote north coast, just offshore from where, on the reef in the Kalohi Channel, several ships have run aground over the years. Shipwreck Beach itself comprises of a handful of smaller beaches— Awalua, Lapaiki, Po’aiwa, Federation Camp—all quite secluded, and with narrow strips of sand, backed by shallow sand dunes.

Shipwreck Beach can be reached from Lanai City on Keomuku Road north, roughly 6.5 miles.

Garden of the Gods

The “Garden of the Gods,” is located in the remote, rugged northern part of the island, roughly 6 miles northwest of Lanai City. It is an unusual, eerie landscape, a strange, natural phenomenon where, in an eroded canyon of red soil, scores of boulders of varying shapes, sizes and colors—in hues of red, blue and orange—lie scattered about, creating a lunarscape of sorts. At sunset, the colors are especially stunning. There are also good views of the ocean from here.
