Situated on the east coast of the island, east of Lanai City, and reached by way of Keomuku Rd. (Hwy. 430) north from Lanai City, 6½ miles, to the very end, then southeast along the coast another 5½ miles on a bumpy dirt road to Keomuku. Keomuku itself is the site of the failed, late 19th-century Maunalei sugar plantation, where the sites of some old plantation homes are still visible, as well as the old ramshackle Ka Lanakila O Ka Malamalama Church, the last structure to be left standing in Keomuku, dating from 1903 and with the distinction of being the oldest church on the island, nestled in a grove of coconut palms.
