Tubac, Patagonia, Sierra Vista, Tombstone, Bisbee and Nogales

TubacTubac, originally established in 1752 as a Spanish presidio, lies approximately 40 miles south of Tucson on Interstate 19. The village is a blend of Old Spain and Mexico, with one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques, and art galleries and artists.Patagonia and ElginPatagonia, Sonoita and the Arizona wine country center of Elgin constitute the state’s “Mountain Empire,” situated roughly 35 miles southeast of Tucson, with some of the higher elevations hovering around 5,000 feet. The principal interest here lies in Patagonia, which is quickly emerging as a haven for artists, with an array of galleries, shops and restaurants dotting its downtown. Patagonia also has something for naturalists: the Nature Conservancy’s Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve, where you can observe over 300 species of birds.Sierra Vista and TombstoneSierra Vista is situated just east of Patagonia, and Tombstone a little way to the northeast of Sierra Vista. At Sierra Vista, a city of approximately 40,000, dubbed the “Humming Bird Capital of the U.S.,” the place to visit is the Nature Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve, one of the most popular birding spots for miles around. And there are other canyons besides, just outside the city, that offer great bird watching possibilities as well.Tombstone, in contrast, is an authentic Old West town, and the site of the legendary “Gunfight at O.K. Corral.” Here you can walk down wooden boardwalks, poke around shops bursting with Western souvenirs and paraphernalia, and watch gunfights, staged daily. Also, the town’s Western Heritage Museum houses the largest collection of Wyatt Earp memorabilia.BisbeeBisbee is a 19th century mining city, situated on a hillside southeast of Sierra Vista and Tombstone. Its attractions include its colorful downtown lined with Victorian and Old West buildings; the Queen Mine Tour which takes visitors into a real copper mine; and the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum, devoted to the area’s mining past.NogalesNogales, Sonora, lies just over the border in Mexico, some 10 miles or so south of Tubac (approximately 50 miles south of Tucson) on Interstate 19. Just park your car on the US side and walk across. There are colorful, bustling markets here, where you can buy pottery, leather goods, silver jewelry and assorted south-of-the-border goods. The city has a resident population of around 300,000.
