Palmer, Wasilla and Talkeetna

PalmerPalmer is located at the heart of the fertile Matanuska Valley, roughly 45 miles north of Anchorage, on the scenic Glen Highway. It is in this valley, also known as Mat-Su Valley, where families from the Midwest settled during 1835 and began farming as part of the New Deal. The town is rich in the history of these 20th- century settlers. And each year in August, it also hosts the Alaska State Fair, showcasing outsized vegetables.WasillaAnother town in another valley, this one the Susitna Valley. Susitna actually adjoins the Matanuska Valley (see above), and that places Wasilla, the main town here, close to Palmer. But Wasilla is important in its own right as the home of Alaska’s - and so the world’s - most famous sled dog race, the Iditarod, the “Last Great Race.” You can meet several veterans of the race here, and even visit some of the local dog kennels. Also, at nearby Big Lake there are good boating and salmon fishing possibilities.TalkeetnaApproximately eighty miles north of Wasilla lies Talkeetna, the staging site for an assault on Mt McKinley, the highest peak in North America, elevation 20,320 feet. While the traditional way to ascend the mountain is by climbing, you can also take aerial tours of the mountain.Try to also visit the Independence Mine State Historical Park farther along at Hatcher Pass, where you can see the abandoned mine buildings and gold mining equipment in the old mines.
