Cancún Orientation

Cancún (population 325,000) is divided into two zones, the downtown and the Hotel Zone. The Hotel Zone sits alongside the clear Caribbean Sea and is the Cancún you see in all the brochures and ads. Hotels here are more expensive than those downtown. The beaches have it all for sun and fun vacations. The downtown is inland, connected to the Hotel Zone by the Paseo Kukulcán and reached by inexpensive (80¢) public buses or taxis. Distances are marked along the 27-km Paseo Kukulcán in the Hotel Zone, beginning downtown. Clearly marked “Zona Hoteles,” the Ruta (Route) #1 and #2 buses take you downtown and back (Ruta #1 turns up Av. Tulum, Ruta 2 crosses it on Av. Cobá). A fun way to get around the Hotel Zone is by Water Taxi (  998/883-3155), which plies the lagoon hourly from 9 am to 11 pm. It stops at major marinas and sites, allowing you to get out and shop or dine. It’s a relaxing, enjoyable way to get around town without clogging the roads. A weekly pass is about US $35, a day-pass is US $15, and one-way trips are US $3. Children are half-price. For the Isla Mujeres ferry from downtown, walk north on Av. Tulum across Av. Uxmal to the supermarket, Comercial Mexicana (look for the pelican logo), and catch the bus marked “Puerto Juárez” at the bus stop there. It goes right to the ferry dock.

The main drag downtown is Av. Tulum, which runs north and south perpendicular to Av. Cobá. Cobá becomes Paseo Kukulcán (also spelled Kukulkán) in the Hotel Zone. Most of the downtown attractions – stores, hotels and restaurants – cluster around the three parallel avenues of Nader, Tulum and Yaxchilán. The bus station is behind the circle of Av. Tulum and Av. Uxmal. City blocks in Spanish are manzanas and groups of blocks are supermanzanas or SM. The heart of the downtown is a rhomboid-shaped area surrounded by Avenidas Tulum and Yaxchilán, Uxmal and Cobá.
