Sightseeing in Szentendre

Sightseeing in Szentendre

Szentendre is itself a museum, but, given that, it is also home to over 20 museums and art galleries, with work by some of the most famous artists in Hungarian history, among them Jenö Barcsay, Margit Kovács, János Kmetty, and Károly Ferenczy. A visit to the recently opened Art Mill (Mûvészet- Malom) reveals an old mill with the medieval flour maker’s trade creating an ambience that oozes around the different exhibits and cultural activities. But of all aspects of your visit here, do not miss what is most famous to Hungarians. Szentendre has the most visited ethnographic museum outside of Budapest in the entire nation, the fabulous Open- Air Folk Museum. Entrance fees run from 400 HUF per person to about 800 HUF per person. It is constructed at the foot of the hills, on 140 green acres of fertile Duna land. If you want a real taste of the real Hungary of the past the reconstructed villages and homes are built exactly according to the period and the style of their respective originals, from every period and every part of Hungary. The extraordinarily revealing descriptions from the life of each region are also written in English. Every year, more exhibits are added and new artifacts are brought in. Its grounds are surrounded with shops and eateries, and there is a playground in the back. In addition, tours are offered in English. Numerous festivals held on the museum grounds attract people from throughout the region, not just tourists. Book more than a day if you are interested in history, culture and adventuresome activities. At this museum you can try your hand at the handicrafts as many of the exhibits have interactive demonstrations. Turn the ancient potter’s wheel and make your own cookware, bake Hungarian brioche (kalács) and participate in everyday peasant activities of medieval times. Try to arrange your stay in conjunction with one of the folk festivals held on the museum grounds (especially the summer festival), when dancing and music is done in authentic dress, accompanied by skilled musicians playing genuine folk instruments.

The museum has brought other attractions here as well, turning the town into one of the most highly concentrated historical centers in Hungary outside of Budapest.
