Boppard

Boppard, Germany (cc)

Boppard (Left Bank)

Boppard is a lovely town on the left bank of the Rhine, with its pretty white buildings populating the shores of the river, offering a beautiful panorama.

In Boppard, among the places of places of interest is the fourth-century fort, Roman Kastell, situated on Angertstraße. It is the best-preserved Roman fort in Germany, where, two towers and 55 meters (170 feet) of the ancient wall survive. The original structure was 308 by 154 meters (1,102 by 508 feet) and boasted 28 fortified towers. The fort site is accessible free of charge.

Another, the two-tower, triple-nave St Severuskirche (St Severus Church) on the Marktplatz, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, is also worth seeing. It has fine Romanesque wall paintings, and is a good example of Late Rhineland Romanesque.

Of interest, too, is Boppard's Local History Museum, housed in the tower of the former Kurtrierische Burg (Trier Prince Electors’ Fortress), located on An der Fähre. It has displays on local history, including a large collection of wood furniture by Michael Thonet (1796-1871). The fortress itself is just as interesting, originally built in the early 14th century by the archbishop of Trier to both enforce his rule on the town and enhance tolls collected on the Rhine. The unique thing about this castle is that unlike the other Rhine castles, it is at river level and not in the hills.

Finally, there's a chairlift north of the town that takes visitors in 20 minutes from the Mühltal to the Gedeonseck viewing point, from where the Rhine’s biggest horseshoe bend can be seen. Also from here, it's an easy walk to the so-called Vierseenblick (Four Lakes View), which offers a one-of-a-kind view of the Rhine, with the curves and hills making the river appear like four lakes.
