Sightseeing in Hannover

Sightseeing in Hannover (Hanover)

The main attractions in Hanover are the museums, mostly in the vicinity of the Rathaus, and the Herrenhausen Gardens to the west of the city.

Rathaus Area

The Rathaus (Town Hall), Trammplatz 2, erected in 1901-13 in a Wilhelmine style, is the symbol of Hanover. Built on 6,026 pilings, it is best seen from across the Masch pond. The best view of town is from the cupola, reached by elevator. Note the models of Hanover in the entrance portals.

In front of the Rathaus is the Kestner Museum, Trammplatz 3. It has large collections on four themes: Egypt, Art of Antiquity, Decorative Art, and Numismatics. The latter two collections focus mainly on Europe with special emphasis on the area that covers modern-day Lower Saxony.

The Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum (Lower Saxony National Museum), Willy-Brandt-Allee 5, is the largest and most popular museum in the state. It has a huge collection of European paintings from the 12th to 20th century. Its prehistoric department is also popular, with articles and models displaying the early history of the region.

The Sprengel-Museum, Kurt-Schwitters- Platz, houses one of the largest 20th-century art collections in Germany. It has representative works by all major artists of all genres.

Markt Area

Hanover rebuilt after World War II and the few remaining old buildings are west of the Markt. The 14th-century brick Gothic Marktkirche (Market Church), Hanns-Lilje-Platz 2, was rebuilt true to the original in the 1950s. The 97-m (320-foot) tower seems strangely short but is similar to the original, which was completed prematurely due to a lack of funds. The interior has a remarkable 14th-century wood-carved altar and a 15th-century bronze baptismal font. Some of the stained-glass windows are original. The doors are from 1957 and illustrate scenes from modern German history.

The nearby Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall, right) is another example of north German brick Gothic. It was built over a period of a century, starting in 1410.

Kramer and Burgstraße are lined by rebuilt half-timbered buildings. Some of the original town defenses survived at Hohen Ufer, but the area is dominated by the modern Historisches Museum am Hohen Ufer (Local History Museum), Pferdestraße 6 (Entrance in Burgstraße),   0511-1684- 3052. It has an interesting eclectic collection illustrating the city’s sometimes turbulent history. In addition to the usual range of arts and applied arts it has a collection of small German cars produced locally in the 1920s. It is a great museum for children as well.
