A Brief History of Celle

A Brief History of Celle

Celle can trace its history back to 993, but only received town rights in 1248. Parts of the Schloss and church date to 1292 when Duke Otto der Strenge (Otto the Strict) moved the town center three km downstream for strategic reasons. It was the seat of the Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg until the family died out in 1705. The town became part of Hannover until the Prussians took over in 1866. Celle survived World War II undamaged. The largest concentration camp on German soil was set up near the town of Bergen, a few km to the north.
