This former prisoner of war and later concentration camp was the largest Nazi such camp on German soil. Between 1940 and 1945, 70,000 people died here – the most famous, Anne Frank. The British liberated the camp on April 15, 1945 and burned the remains to the ground a month later to prevent the spread of disease. The memorial site is park-like and strangely peaceful, as only the foundations of the former buildings remain. A documentation center has exhibitions on the horrors that occurred here. A chilling half-hour video is played – children under 12 are not allowed in the theater. The site is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm. It is best reached by private transportation. Admission is free.
