Triberg

Triberg is Black Forest tourism central. It is full of souvenir shops and restaurants willing to dish out the authentic Black Forest experience. For independent travelers it is generally best to eat and stay elsewhere.

Germany’s highest waterfall is in Triberg. Three well-marked paths, usually crowded, lead from the town center to the falls, where the Gutach River tumbles 534 ft in seven cascades. The shortest route takes about half an hour from the bottom gate to the top of the falls and back. The falls attract a half-million visitors annually. From April to October the waterfalls are lit until midnight.

Also in the heart of town is the Schwarzwaldmuseum (Black Forest Museum), which has displays of cuckoo clocks, mechanical instruments, traditional dress and other such items.

And then there's Maria in der Tanne, which is a lovely Baroque pilgrimage church dating from around 1700. The high altar and pulpit are especially worth seeing. The church is on the edge of town on the road to Furtwangen. It can also easily be reached on one of the walks from the waterfalls.

Triberg is a good area to buy cuckoo clocks and any other Black Forest kitsch. Haus der 1000 Uhren, An der B33, 78098 Triberg, 07722-96-300, www.houseof1000clocks.com, is one of the largest sellers of Black Forest clocks. It sells the complete range from items for around €15 to grandfather clocks costing thousands of euros. Worldwide shipping can be arranged and the prices quoted to include all handling, customs, and delivery charges. The main shop is on the B33 near Triberg en route to Hornberg. A smaller shop is in Triberg itself at the crossing below the entrance to the waterfalls.

Through the centuries, the watchmakers of the Black Forest produced many types of clocks, but none more famous or more often associated with the area than the cuckoo clock. The first clocks using the two-tone sound of the cuckoo were produced around 1730 – argument still rages about whether it happened in Schönwald or Neukirch. The cuckoo clock in the form known today is more recent – it was first produced in 1850 after a competition to find a design that would be more popular.
