The Meersburg Alte Burg (Old Fortress), is the most important sight here. The core of the castle was built by the Merovingian King Dagoberth I in the seventh century. It is thus the oldest still inhabitable castle in Germany. The prince-bishops of Konstanz used the castle as a summer residence from 1268 until it became their permanent residence after the introduction of the Reformation forced them out of Konstanz in 1526.
A self-guided tour of the Meersburg castle leads through 30 rooms and includes the ones used by famous German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, who frequently sojourned here in the mid-19th century. The tower, however, can only be seen on a short guided tour. Splendid views of the lake are available from many vantage points but are most enjoyable from the small terrace of the castle café.
