Mercedes-Benz and Porsche
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz is the most famous company associated with Stuttgart. Its presence is everywhere from the large star on the roof of the station to its head offices and several factories. Note that the three attractions mentioned below are geographically quite a distance from one another.
The Mercedes-Benz Museum, Mercedesstraße 137, is popular. About 100 cars from the collection of this famous company are on display, including the fabulous Silver Arrows racing cars of the 50s, the first Mercedes, and cars owned by celebrities. Chrysler gets only a (grudging) mention on one of the information panels. The first Benz is a copy – the original is in the German Museum in Munich.
A must for fans of classic cars is the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, Stuttgarter Straße 90, 70736 Fellbach. This center has a workshop where classic cars belonging to the museum and well-healed customers are serviced and restored. It also sells spare parts for classic cars and can provide information and advice on buying such models.
Porsche
Stuttgart’s second car company is much smaller but no less famous. The Porsche Museum, Porscheplatz 1, 70435 Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, 0711-911- 5685, www2.porsche.de, is disappointingly small. It has only 40 cars and is worth the effort only for dedicated fans. Porsche also has a Classic Center for the restoration of classic models. It can also provide information and advice, and it sells spare parts.
