Massif du Tanneron
The Massif du Tanneron is a small extension of the northeast corner of the Estérel, separated from it by a valley through which the A8 Autoroute now runs. Unlike both the Estérel and the Maures, the Tanneron is not a conservation area or nature reserve but is mostly cultivated land. What makes it unusual is its crop – mimosas.
Mimosa, a variety of acacia originally from Australia, was brought to the region by the English upper classes who “discovered” the Côte d’Azur as a winter resort in the late 19th century. The climate suited the plant and before long it had naturalized, spreading from the gardens of the grand houses to the whole of the Côte d’Azur.
The hills of the Tanneron suited it in particular. Eventually, early in the 20th century, local people realized the plant’s commercial potential. Today, as a cut flower and for use in the perfume industry, mimosa from the Tanneron is sent all over the world.
