Dominical

Dominical

Dominical is a surfer village situated approximately forty km/25 miles south of Manuel Antonio National Park, and marks the beginning of the southern section of Costa Rica. It is the gateway for drivers heading to the Osa Peninsula; the road south is good from here. Or you can reach it via a four-hour drive from San José over the Talamanca mountains through San Isidro de General. If you’re driving that way, try and time your mountain crossing for the mornings or take the more popular (and perhaps safer) way along coastal highway through Quepos. The town’s only gas station is two km/1.25 miles north of town near the Hacienda Barú (which happens to rent cabins.).

Dominical gets strong winds off the Pacific; the coconut palms lining the beach are bent by its diligence. The pueblo and beach are near the mouth of the Río Barú, which, combined with the winds, makes a very strong and potentially dangerous surf. It’s not suitable for swimming, and that’s what attracts the surfers bent on riding its 10-foot waves. Kayak Joe’s (506/787-0121), next to the supermercado, is the biggest operator for local tours, including one by kayak to sea caves and another that’s a snorkel trip to Ballena National Marine Park. His trip to Playa Ventanas’ sea caves is for experienced daredevil kayakers. Learn to surf like the pros at the Green Iguana Surf Camp (506/787-0192, www.greeniguanasurfcamp.com).
