DMNH originally opened in 1936 as part of the state's centennial celebration. Its purpose was to "interpret the natural history of the state for the casual visitor." Fifty dioramas were created to depict the flora and fauna of Texas. The DMNH also spearheaded field work to build the natural history collections of vertebrates and invertebrates in the state. In the early 1960's, the museum broadened its mission to encompass education, which remains a major focus of the museum today. The Museum's mission is to further an understanding and appreciation of the natural world through collections-based research, education, and exhibition programs, and in particular to further an understanding of the biological diversity and natural history of Texas. The museum is perhaps best known for bringing the Rameses the Great exhibition to Texas as part of a long-range campaign to raise the profile of DMNH in the Dallas community. Ambitious plans are currently underway to expand the DMNH, renovate the exhibitions, and increase museum programming. Parts of the plan have already been implemented, and the museum has developed a research focus on archaeology and paleontology as well as a broad range of educational offerings.
