Colorful, 38-acre quarter, adjoining to the west of downtown Honolulu, bounded by Nu’uanu Avenue and North Beretania, North King and River streets. Originally established in the early 1800s and largely rebuilt at the turn of the century. Features lively sidewalk markets, scores of Chinese restaurants and diners, noodle factories, fabric stores, handicraft emporiums, souvenir shops and, along a stretch of North Hotel Street, dance halls, porn shops, pool halls, gambling dens and cheap bars. Places of particular interest here include the old Oahu Market, an open-air produce market at the corner of Kekaulike and North King streets, established in 1904; the pink-and-green Wo Fat Restaurant on North Hotel Street, dating from 1882; the River Street Pedestrian Mall, which comprises a section of River Street, between Beretania and Kukui streets; the lei shops along Beretania Street, between Smith and Maunakea streets; and the Kuan Yin Temple, the oldest Chinese temple in Honolulu, dating from the 1880s and located on North Vineyard Boulevard.
