The Bishop Museum is Hawaii’s most famous museum, housing one of the world’s greatest collections of Hawaiian cultural and natural history artifacts, frequently referred to as the “Smithsonian of the Pacific.”
Bishop Museum was founded in 1899 by Charles Reed Bishop, and dedicated to his late wife, Bernice Pauahi Bishop, a Hawaiian princess of the Kamehameha dynasty, who personally collected many of the artifacts on display here.
At the center of the museum is the Hawaiian Hall, where exhibits include 26 original feather cloaks of Hawaiian kings—including those worn by King Kamehameha I—as well as feather helmets, leis, carved calabashes and wooden tikis, temple drums, 19th-century Hawaiian weapons, royal thrones and royal crowns. There is also a Polynesian Hall here, which has displays centered around the history and culture of Pacific Polynesia, including several collections of archaeological artifacts from the Polynesian islands; and the Hawaiian Hall of Natural History, featuring exhibits depicting Hawaii’s geological formation. Another, the Hall of Discovery, has hands-on science and Pacific culture educational exhibits for children. Besides which there are a planetarium and observatory on the premises, and a native Hawaiian culture and arts program that includes lei-making, hala-weaving, quilting, hula demonstrations and Hawaiian music.
There is a restaurant and gift shop on the premises.
