Chateau Montelena is housed in a French-architect-designed native stone castle, dating from 1882. The castle is built into a hillside overlooking picturesque Jade Lake, with its tiny islands and red lacquered pavillions, and little arched bridges connecting the islands. The winery is of course noted for its superb 1973 Chardonnay, which won top honors at the 1976 Paris Tasting, ahead of 12 California and French offerings. In addition to varietal Chardonnay, the winery also produces two Cabernets, one each from Napa and Sonoma counties, a Zinfandel, and a Johannisberg Riesling which is sold only at the winery. Wine sales and tasting 9.30am-4pm daily; tasting fee: $10.00. Tours by appointment, Mar.-Oct., at 9.30am and 1.30pm.
