A Tudor-style English pub set in the middle of a tropical island looks as out of place like a snowman in the Sahara Desert. However it serves as a convivial meeting spot for the Brits who have set up home on the island and provides a break from Thai cuisine for visitors. The food is excellent thanks to the culinary skills of Sandeep Pande who has been chef de cuisine since the inn opened. The service is a little slow, which is great because it gives you time to enjoy reading the out-of-the-ordinary extensive menu, which is the work of pub owner Howard Digby Johns. Sunday is a great day to visit. The British Sunday lunches are authentic, truly spiffing, with loads of fresh vegetables all grown in Thailand. The roast beef comes with traditional Yorkshire puddings and I smothered my succulent roast lamb with lashings of mint sauce. Sunday is family day and the garden is the ideal place for younger ones to play. Other items worth a mention are the English sausages, locally made but as good as any English butcher can produce, and served with tasty home-made baked beans and proper mashed potatoes. No wonder British TV chef Keith Floyd was among the diners when we visited. If you’re around over the Christmas period the pub offers an extensive Yuletide program with everything from roast goose to a Boxing Day pantomime. (If you don’t know what that is look back in this section for the piece about the Simon Cabaret.) Prices are a little higher than elsewhere, but the portions are large, and you would pay a great deal more for similar meals in the UK. Good value for money.
