The Boathouse Wine & Grill Without doubt our favorite dining spot in Phuket. The Boathouse claims to be a hotel but it is really a restaurant with rooms. The meals would win awards in any country in the world and the ambience of dining on the beach with the Andaman Sea gently lapping below you is unbeatable. Every day executive chef Tummanoon Punchun and his army of helpers add a couple of specials to the already spectacular menu. The prices are high as is the quality, so do not look for bargains. Expect dinner to cost around $40 a head provided you stay away from some of the really expensive wines. The Boathouse boasts on having the largest wine cellar in Thailand, and probably the largest in Southeast Asia. One of the best meals we have enjoyed at The Boathouse was in the company of the then-general manager Louis Bronner, a savvy French hotelier whose dedication to perfection does not go unnoticed. Mr. Bronner later became the personal representative of owner ML Tri Devakul. The first course is always preceded by a small complimentary dish that is different each night. Tonight it was a zesty Thai split pea soup. Then came a selection of seafood in a light sauce all encased in puff pastry. The garnish was a half-dozen spears of asparagus that looked identical (someone had gone to a great deal of trouble selecting the spears) and were poached to perfection. To help that slide down was a dry Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, Giesen Marlborough 2002. Our main dish was a small rack of Australian lamb served with tiny mounds of scrumptious accompaniments that included peppers and onions. A side order of scalloped potatoes completed that portion of the meal. The wine, as expected, was from France – a Château Beausite 1996. Somehow we managed a dessert of ice cream and local fruits. For a fine meal like this expect to pay $100 a couple.
