In the early 1970s Giovanna Visco, heir to the noble Visco family’s wine estate that had dissolved several years earlier, decided to leave the teaching profession along with her husband, Giuseppe Coffele, to revive her family’s tradition. In the 1800s the Visco family established an important wine estate in the zone that Giovanna and Giuseppe, along with their two children Alberto and Chiara, take great pride in.
One of Soave’s premier wineries, Coffele produces approximately 100,000 bottles each year, including Soave Classico, Ca Visco and Recioto di Soave wines made from primarily Garganega grapes. Their wines are exported to Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, the USA, Australia and Hong Kong.
Wine tastings can be arranged upon request, but Signor Coffele, who spends much of his time tending his grapes, is particularly happy to take visitors for a tour of his vineyards in Castelcerino (seven km north of Soave) to demonstrate the relationship between art and science in the process. Wine tastings generally cost Euro 6 per person for three wines and i12 when served with cheese.
They often take place at the large banquet table in the main hall but if you’re fortunate enough to arrive on a pleasant day, the Coffele family may invite you into their garden that sits just below Soave’s castle (one of the prettiest settings in town) for wine tastings.
If not for the award-winning wine alone, stop in to chat with the friendly owners who take great pride in their winemaking tradition and are interested in imparting their knowledge to visitors.
