Heading north toward the center of town, the winding Viale della Serpentina takes you up to Parco della Rocca, from where a network of paths lead you up to the summit of the 411-m (1,348-foot) hill with its great views over the town center. Head back along the Via della Rocca – past a stretch of the original Etruscan- Roman wall – to pick up the access road to the beautifully decorated façade of the Tempio di San Fortunato. This is the famous home to the remains of the Franciscan poet, Jacopone da Todi and the second- largest religious construction in Umbria. It’s situated atop a fine stairway.
A church has existed on this site since 1000 AD (the present building was rebuilt in the 15th century) and the two lions, which stand beside the entrance are thought to be from that time. The complex includes an imposing Gothic bell tower and the convent, which includes the Chiostro di San Fortunato (Cloister of St Fortunato) with its elegant single-nave interior and finely carved choir stalls that date to the 14th century. In its crypt you will find the relics of the patron saint, San Fortunato, and the tomb of Jacopone. There’s a further monument to him just outside the church on the entrance to Piazza Jacopone, but before you head here, take the steep Via di San Fortunato – past balconies covered in ivy and geraniums – in the direction of Porta Marzia (Marzia Gate) and the town’s best-preserved medieval quarter.
