Foligno’s Romanesque cathedral is the city’s most important architectural attraction. Originally constructed in the 12th century, only the crypt remains of the ancient church; the slightly austere double façade (one looking out over Piazza Duomo; the other on to Piazza della Repubblica), enlivened by three delicate rose windows, and the three naves, all taking their form in the 15th and 16th centuries. Once inside, most tourists flock to the Cappella del Sacramento (Chapel of the Sacrament), which was originally built by Antonio di Sangallo il Giovanne in the 16th century, and to a Madonna di Foligno by Raphael. Adjacent to the cathedral is the 13th-century Palazzo dei Canoniche (Canonical Palace), which, originally built to house the College of the Canons. It is best known for the workshops on its ground floor formerly used by the best of Foligno’s painters, goldsmiths and coin makers.
