Scenic Cascia’s most famous local character is St Rita (1381-1457), a saint widely believed to grant wishes, and who is remembered in the Santuario e Chiesa di San Rita, a sanctuary that draws pilgrims from all over the world. The walk up from town drops you off in front of the main portal where sculptures in Carrara marble by Eros Pellini depict tales from the life of the saint. Her remains are in a glass case inside to the left, with frescoes by Montanarini, Filocamo and Ceracchini and a main altar by Giacomo Manzù. The city’s other main medieval attractions are the Gothic Chiesa di San Francesco, with its beautiful rose window and ogival portal, and the Chiesa di San Antonio which dates from the 15th century, but has since been reconstructed in Baroque style. It contains a cycle of notable frescoes depicting the Life of St Antony by an unknown Umbrian artist and scenes of the Passion by Nicola da Siena. The Gothic Chiesa di Santa Augustine contains more frescoes.
