A charming walk around the city walls offers a magnificent view over the valley from Torgiano to Perugia, to Assisi, to Trevi, and on to the hills that join with the Tiber Valley. Another trail takes you into the woods of Monte Lauro with its free-running hot spring, and these tracks can also be explored on horseback; contact Natura Amica or Umbria a Cavallo to set up a ride. A pleasant cycle trip will bring you to the hamlet of Passaggio, with Abbazia di San Crispolto and 18th-century Villa Boccaglione (attributed to Piermarini who designed the Teatro alla Scala in Milan) and onto Cannara. Continue through the town (in the direction of Bevagna) and you’ll pass the small Chiesa di San Giovanni to arrive at Pian d’Arca, the legendary site of St Francis’s sermon to the birds, which you will already have seen immortalized in Giotto’s frescoes in the Basilica di San Francesco in Assisi.
