Surrounded by trees and gentle fields, the abandoned 13th-century Abbazia di San Galgano more than lives up to its picturesque reputation as the “abbey without a roof.” The skeleton that remains (with grass floor and sky roof) is a fascinating example of Cistercian Gothic architecture, best visited in the early morning or late afternoon when its pointed arches and shapely windows create an atmospheric shadow. If you’re here around 25 July-20 August, you’re in for a treat; the Festival di Chiusdino includes prose, classical music, opera and dance performances in the abbey.
