North of Carrara, the SS446 takes you to Fosdinovo. The town was seriously damaged in WorldWar II, but it does conserve what is probably the most impressive – and definitely the most photographed – of the castles erected by the Malaspina in Lunigiana in the 14th century. Castello Malaspin was the refuge for an exiled Dante in 1306. The castle’s solid, quadrangular walls with their high cylindrical towers sit majestically on a spur 500 m (1,640 feet) high, overlooking steep, wooded valleys. It should be your first stop before heading to the 14th-century Chiesa di San Remigio, which conserves the much-venerated marble sepulchre of Galeotto Malaspina.
