Although out of the “Terre del Rinascimento” per se, Fucecchio and its marsh (the Padule di Fucecchio, 057-384540) can be found only a short drive west. The marsh (which stretches as far north as Monsummano Terme) makes an interesting diversion for naturalists and bird-watchers – 150 species have been noted here, including nesting herons and migratory birds such as the stilt-plover, crane and black stork (right). There are also nine walking itineraries to enjoy, many taking you past some of the marsh’s collection of endangered plant species, such as beautiful yellow- flowered water lilies otherwise rare in Italy. If you’re interested, sign yourself up for one of the three guided itineraries led by the Centro di Ricerca, signposted off the SS436 north of Fucecchio. They are also the people to contact if you are interested in canoeing along one of the reserve’s canals.
