A commentary board at the entrance to the church introduces one of Italy’s most important Renaissance fresco cycles: Piero della Francesca’s Legend of the True Cross, detail at right, in the Cappella Bacci behind the choir (tickets available from the gift shop adjacent to the church, 0575-24001, 9 am-7 pm, till 6 pm in winter, reservations required, Euro 4, conc. Euro 3 including audio commentary). It was begun by Bacci di Lorenzo in 1447 but, on his death in 1452, only the four Evangelists in the cross-vaulted choir ceiling, the Last Judgmen on the front wall of the arch and the two Doctors of the Church inside the arch had been completed. Local boy, Piero della Francesca took over in 1453, completing the cycle 13 years later. It is currently seen at its brightest after 15 years of restoration. The fresco was inspired by Jacopo da Varagine’s 13th-century Golden Legend, and you really do need the audio guide to help you follow the narrative, jumping about as it does from scene to scene. Many believe that scene five (The Annunciation) should actually be placed last, partly because it doesn’t appear in Varagine’s original story.
