The ancient Shankaracharya Temple, situated on Shankaracharya Hill at an elevation of 1,100 feet, overlooking the city of Srinagar, is the oldest shrine in Kashmir. It was originally built in 371 BC by the Hindu ruler Raja Gopadatya, and later on added to by Dogra ruler Maharaja Gulab Singh. In 1925, electricity was introduced to the temple. Besides being a place of worship for Hindus, Shankaracharya Temple is a national archeological treasure.
