For the Northern Region the best adventures can be had with Equus Ltd. The ranch is in a low-lying mountain area outside of Hollókõ, but starting points for excursions can vary. Some tours can be done with accompanying horse-drawn carriage for the inexperienced, but a minimumnumber of riders is required. Check with Márta Jókai. It is the center for breeding 80 Kisbéri horses. These noble-looking creatures were bred for the legendary Hussar cavalry officers during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Highly intelligent and easy to ride, they are extremely reliable, stable, and an enduring partner on long trips. The average height is 16-17 hands. They are kept under the best conditions, with wide, healthy pastures. The leader of this stable is János Lóska, former member of the Hungarian Eventing team. Instruction is on an international level. The cross-country ride averages 40-50 km/25 to 30 miles a day, in English style. You will cross prairies and fields, ford streams, pass through forest glades, and witness the Hungarian countryside of the farmers and woodsmen. They will pick you up in Budapest and take you to the starting point, if it is at the ranch or elsewhere, and book all accommodations ahead in “stable” hotels where you will have good quality double bedrooms with bathroom, and all meals (genuine Hungarian, of course), with an option to purchase good quality wines as well. At the stable hotels, they will feed, water, and bed down the horses as required, so they’ll be ready for you to leave in the morning.
