From Baross tér head back down to the intersection of Erzsébet körút at the Blaha Lujza tér. Turn north. Walk or tram to the Oktogon (the buildings and street form an octagon). Again, dozens of eateries mingle with shops, cafés, theaters and night spots all along the way. Your first stop should be without a doubt, the New York Kávéház. This has been a landmark in Budapest since the turn of the 19th century.
Set in a small square, as the street bends, its soaring spires and six-story façade dominate the scene. I was taken aback by the splendor and opulence of the glittering Neo-Baroque interior, with gold columns soaring cathedral-like over the tables. Chefs apprenticed in the old Hungarian style of the Gundel restaurant offer up the famous Hungarian Somloi Galuska (cake in chocolate sauce and cream) and capuccino. Don’t miss it.
