Come out of Gundel’s and turn around the corner back away from Heroes’ Square, and walk half a block to a white stuccoed restaurant on your right with a medieval round tower window on the face and a dark wood trim and shingled wood roof in Transylvanian style. This is the Bagolyvár (The Owl’s Castle), noon-11 pm daily. Average entrée is 2,500 to 3,000 HUF, and it’s family-friendly.
Started in a partnership between Gundel and American-Hungarian George Lang, it has a different atmosphere than the elegant Gundel’s, attempting to recapture mother’s cooking and the homespun hospitality of Hungary in days gone by. It even has its own pantry, where you can buy preserves. Although the menu has a basic Hungarian selection, there is a daily menu and he chef will change the food with the season and daily buys of the kitchen (deliciously prepared).
The restaurant is run by and staffed entirely by women, from Sándor Zsuzsanna in PR/management to Németh Andrea, the head chef. The feeling is relaxed, with a quiet elegance in the tables and chairs. The dining room has open wood beamed ceilings and there is a shaded outside patio for afternoon and evening conversation over the good food.
