Aranymokus Kertvendeglo (Golden Squirrel Garden Restaurant), started in 1886. It has been in the same family through four generations. After a period of closure, István and Zsuszanna Verhanovits celebrated 100 years of the family ownership by reopening in 1996. A green leafy bower takes you away from the street. Pots flower with grape plants and the atmosphere of a 19th-century Hungarian house. The summer garden contains 12 booths seating up to six diners each.
Traditional lamps hang from a glass ceiling that shields the guests from the patter of the rain and the sun. The inner room is called the winter garden and is notable for the tables separated by green lattice woodwork, decorated with flowers, wooden wild ducks and candles. Here is one place where, aside from the fine quality general fare, the fish platters are truly worth the price.
Try the roasted pike-perch Carpathianstyle, served with basil. On the other hand, the chicken stuffed with bananas has a delicious juiciness that can’t be beat.
