Back onto Váci út, head right on Szerb utca, to the Serbian Orthodox Church. Sitting contemplatively amidst graves and trees, it symbolizes the strong historical tie to Serbia. Eugene of Savoy received significant aid from the Serbs in his fight against the Turks. The reward came to 40,000 Serbs who were offered refuge in Budapest in 1717, when the Turkish surged again upon European soil.
The Serbian church was originally dedicated to St. George, but in the famous battle of 1686, when the Christian armies recaptured Budapest, it was seriously damaged. Rebuilding efforts included a wooden tower, a new nave, and restoration of its huge variety of icons. These were basically completed in 1752. The small entrance fee introduces a church with cubicles and benches, balanced by oriental yellows, gold, and reds, spread over with Gothic arches.
Photography is not permitted inside. At the top of the street, at Király Pál utca, another tribute to the trauma of the 1838 flood is emblazoned on the wall. Erected in 1938, the flood centenary, the red marble shows the reach of the flood waters against the white relief of stone map.
