Count Andrássy persuaded Franz Joseph to finance the construction of this fabulous structure, and over 10 years were spent in its construction (1873-1884). Lit up at night, the graceful front leads to a scaleddown entry, which however opens out into a breathtaking structure built for the upper class of Hapsburg Europe. Gold and scarlet glitter amidst the rich frescoes of Károly Lotz and Mór Thán. The elegant passages of paneled oak are draped in blue and gold silk, complemented by the sweeping marble staircase.
Franz Joseph was present at the grand opening in 1884. The building across the street from the opera house is appropriately the home of the National Ballet School, formerly the Drecshler House, built in 1884 by Ödön Lechner before he developed his unique Hungarian style of architecture.
