The current church is one of the most important and best-preserved examples of High Romanesque architecture in Germany. It was constructed around 1100 to replace the earlier Carolingian church, which was damaged by fire in 1070. The interior is decorated with statues and carvings done by highly skilled Italian artists. The choir was reconstructed in the mid-14th century in a Gothic style and the south towers only completed in the 19th century. During the 1930s, the Nazis considered the church to have special significance as it contained the grave of Heinrich I, founder of the first Reich. The grand staircase dates from the Nazi period, as well as walls, built to return the Romanesque look of the choir, leaving the Gothic only visible from the exterior. Underneath the choir is the crypt, a three-aisle basilica with original Romanesque wall paintings. It had the graves of Heinrich I and his wife Mathilda. However, after she became a saint, his bones were removed to the church itself where they probably burned to ashes in the fire of 1070. (It was practice at the time that the graves of spouses could not be together if only one was declared a saint.) The two small rooms of the treasury contain one of the most valuable church treasures of the Middle Ages. The treasure contains numerous reliquaries adorned with gold and jewels (see above), a codex from the ninth century, the Servatius staff, a golden comb used by Heinrich I, and a knotted carpet dating from 1200. The treasure can only be seen on a guided tour. Opening hours are May to October, Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5:30 pm, Sunday and holidays from noon to 5:30 pm. In April, closing time is 4:40 pm and from November to March 3:30 pm. Combination tickets for the castle museum, church, and treasury are Euro 5, or Euro 4 without the museum.
