About 15 minutes walk from the historic old town area is a very surprising, architecturally unique school building. The Martin Luther Gymnasium was built in 1975 in a typical square GDR fashion according to a standard floor plan known as Erfurt Type II. It looked as exciting as it sounded, and after the Wende the school requested ideas on making it less depressing. Nothing exciting came forth, but upon request the Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser took up the cause. In 1999, the school was changed into a typical Hundertwasser design, complete with multiple bright colors and mosque-like towers.
